Laboratory Safety Manager Certificate (Micro-credential)
This programme can be taken from anywhere in New Zealand with our distance delivery which participants say is more personal than much in-person delivery.

The aim of the micro-credential is to teach and consolidate their knowledge and skills so that they and their employers can continue improving the safety and compliance within their laboratories. The programme might also serve a purpose for responsible people in non-laboratory  settings that oversee or work with similar hazards.

The programme would include two modules, each Level 8:
    • SCI8100 General Principles of Laboratory Management (4 credits)
    • SCI8101 Laboratory Management in a Specific Setting (20 credits)

A book for the programme will be furnished at no additional cost.

Who for
This programme is for Laboratory Managers, Deputy Laboratory Managers, Service Managers and Team Leaders and anyone else who works in a laboratory setting and wishes to up-skill.
Fees

Domestic: $2500 (GST inclusive).  If TEC funding for this programme is approved, the tuition will be reduced to $1536 (GST inclusive).  For 2025, schools may request that the invoice for fees may be deferred to until early 2026.

International: $9750 (GST inclusive).

    • SCI8100 General principals of Laboratory Management

        ◦ Topic 2: How to protect yourself using the hierarchy of controls 
        ◦ Topic 3: Safety Data Sheets 
        ◦ Topic 4: Labelling of hazardous substances 
        ◦ Topic 5: HSNO and GHS Hazard classifications 
        ◦ Topic 6: Personal Protective Equipment 
        ◦ Topic 7: Intrinsic classifications of hazardous substances and their safe management 
        ◦ Topic 8: Storage and prevention of adverse effects 
        ◦ Topic 9: Disposal of hazardous substances 
        ◦ Topic 10: Emergency Management of hazardous substances 


    • SCI8101 Laboratory Management in a Specific Type of Setting
        ◦ Topic 1: Develop and/or review chemical inventory and develop a guideline to identify legacy material for disposal
        ◦ Topic 2: Develop and/or review the emergency response plan 
        ◦ Topic 3: Trial the emergency response plan 
        ◦ Topic 4: Develop and consult on a safe method of use for a corrosive substance 
        ◦ Topic 5: Develop and consult on a safe method of use for a flammable substance 
        ◦ Topic 6: Develop and consult on a safe method of use for a toxic substance 
        ◦ Topic 7: Prepare a basic chemical safety presentation for laboratory workers
        ◦ Topic 8: Prepare a basic chemical spill training session for laboratory workers
        ◦ Topic 9: Develop and consult on a safe method of use for teratogenic compounds

Learning outcome(s)

On successful completion of this programme, learners will be able to:

  • apply principles of laboratory management to analyse information to meet the laboratory safety requirements, and

  • apply principles of laboratory management to provide relevant laboratory safety training in a specific setting.

Verbal follow-up

Entry requirements
  • recommendation of senior person at a laboratory (or employer with similar needs),
  • evidence of chemistry understanding typical of someone with a BSc in Chemistry and one year of professional laboratory experience,
  • access to a laboratory (or similar setting) for the assignment work in the programme, and
  • demonstration of understanding of the programme and general suitability for the study through Real World Education's pre-entry process

Only one intake is planned for 2025, starting 31 March 2025 and a completion deadline of 12 December 2025

There will be video tutorial sessions, tentatively at the following times.  Attending these is strongly recommended.  Most are Fridays, noon - 1 pm.  Those marked with * are repeated on the following Sunday 3 pm - 4 pm.  Although you may attend the Friday and following Sunday session, it is recommended that you only attend one of each pair.  One session is only on the Sunday.
