Financial assistance available to undergrad participants
Our undergraduate programme contains a Level 4 and Level 6 portion. Normally, participants take both of these portions; the total fee for both of these portions combined is listed below under "Programme total".
If you are eligible, a portion of the fees for the undergraduate programme can be paid using the Fees Free scheme. Also depending on your circumstances, you may be able to receive a student loan or student allowance from Studylink for costs associated with the programme.

NZ Laboratory Education offers a number of scholarships for participants. Both domestic and international participants are eligible for scholarships. Each scholarship includes a fees reduction of up to $3000 for participants in the Undergraduate Programme or Postgraduate Diploma in Analytical Science Programme, and up to $1000 for participants in any other programme. Our scholarships reduce, but do not eliminate, the programme fees. Scholarships do not cover any other expenses, such as travel and living costs.
Scholarships are applied for at the same time as the application to a programme. Each of our scholarships are designed to assist different types of students. Normally, students will want to apply for only one scholarship. In the case of participants who apply for only one scholarship, the decision on whether the scholarship is awarded will be done before the participant enrols in the programme.
The scholarships we currently offer are below. Click on a scholarship's title to read more about it.
Dr James L. Smith (Smitty) Scholarship Achievement without excuse
This award is named for a laboratory researcher with a long and distinguished career. When he was very young, Smitty lost his hearing. His education and early career were in an era before accommodations for disabilities. Smitty achieved brilliantly, but at various landmarks was advised not to even attempt the next level of education. Smitty proved the nay-sayers wrong through his accomplishments.
This scholarship is awarded to an individual who has overcome circumstances, whether a disability or not, to perform at excellent standards.
Phylis K. Demchick Scholarship Family progress
This award was named for someone who was the first person in her family to earn a tertiary qualification. She used her diploma-level qualification to build a more successful and interesting career than many people with degrees.
This scholarship is awarded to an individual for whom completion of the programme will be a great achievement for both the individual and the family.
Phyllis A. Stadtwald Scholarship Balancing family and career
This award was named for someone who had a successful career while meeting the diverse needs of family. She never let her career keep her from caring for her family. She never let her family keep her from doing an excellent job.
This scholarship is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated the ability and commitment to not allow work (including study) obligations to cause neglecting of family, or family obligations to cause the neglecting of work (including study).
Robert L. Demchick Scholarship Broad knowledge
It is interesting the way seemingly pointless bits of information come in useful in unanticipated situations. This award is named for someone with a very broad knowledge in many fields. As is true with most people with broad knowledge, much of his stored information was learned outside of a formal classroom setting.
This scholarship is awarded to an individual who has demonstrated a broad knowledge in the sciences and beyond.
Werner H. Stadtwald Memorial Scholarship Love of practical work
This award is named for a person who was doing excellently in a university architecture programme, but came to the realisation that he wanted to build not just design. He left university, and had a very successful career as a builder.
This scholarship is awarded to an individual who has proven ability to achieve in theory learning, but has shown a special enthusiasm for practical work, especially laboratory practical work.
